Following a series of recent incidents involving passengers falling onto tracks, transport safety experts in Malaysia are urging the government to prioritize the installation of Automatic Platform Gates (APG) at all older metro stations. While newer lines like the MRT Putrajaya Line come equipped with full platform screen doors, many older stations in the Kelana Jaya and Ampang lines still rely on open platforms. Experts argue that the current yellow line system is insufficient for managing the high passenger volumes seen during peak hours in 2026.

Proponents of the upgrades point out that the installation of these gates would not only improve safety but also enhance the efficiency of the rail network by reducing the frequency of emergency stops. The Ministry of Transport has reportedly begun a feasibility study to determine the cost of retrofitting these stations, though concerns remain over the potential disruption to daily commutes during the construction phase. Analysts suggest that a phased rollout, starting with the busiest interchange hubs like KL Sentral and Masjid Jamek, would be the most practical approach.

The call for better safety measures coincides with a record surge in public transport ridership as commuters look for alternatives to rising petrol prices and Klang Valley road congestion. Safety advocates emphasize that as the rail network expands, maintaining high safety standards across the entire system is crucial for retaining public trust. The government is expected to address these concerns in the upcoming mid term review of the National Transport Policy, potentially allocating new funds for station modernization projects.
