Search and Rescue (SAR) operations at the Bantargebang landfill in Indonesia have been officially called off today following the recovery of all victims buried in a massive landslide. The disaster, triggered by days of heavy rain and unstable ground conditions, had drawn national attention to the safety of workers and residents living near major waste disposal sites.

In addition to the landslide, East Java has been battered by heavy rain and strong winds, which have claimed at least one life and left several others injured. Local authorities are currently assessing the damage to homes and infrastructure, warning that the unstable weather patterns may continue throughout the week.

Environmental experts are using these incidents to call for a more robust waste management and disaster preparedness strategy. The landfill tragedy in particular has sparked a debate on the urgent need for safer landfill engineering and the relocation of vulnerable communities living in high risk zones.
