The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has officially reduced the traditional 30 day grace period for road tax renewals to just 14 days. This change is part of a broader shift toward a fully digital enforcement framework aimed at increasing road safety and ensuring all vehicles are properly insured. By tightening this window, the authorities intend to minimize the number of vehicles operating without valid documentation on Malaysian roads.

This new 14 day limit is integrated into the MyJPJ digital system, which now automatically cross references vehicle registration data with active insurance databases in real time. If a road tax remains expired beyond the two week mark, the system flags the vehicle, making it easier for enforcement officers to identify violators during routine checks. This automation removes much of the manual guesswork previously involved in monitoring road tax compliance.

To help motorists adjust, the JPJ is encouraging the use of its mobile app for automated expiry reminders and early renewals. Vehicle owners can now renew their road tax and insurance up to two months before the expiry date to avoid falling foul of the stricter 14 day rule. While the transition marks a significant change for long time drivers, the department maintains that the digital infrastructure is now robust enough to support this high  efficiency model.
