GLASGOW — Malaysia’s Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign proved that a smaller contingent does not necessarily translate into a weaker challenge on the international stage.

With only 59 athletes competing across eight sports, Malaysia still surpassed the five-gold target by finishing with eight gold, three silver and five bronze medals — the country’s best Commonwealth Games performance since winning 12 golds at the Delhi 2010 edition.

The achievement was even more significant, as badminton, diving, squash and rhythmic gymnastics, traditionally among Malaysia’s strongest medal sources, were not contested in Glasgow.

Instead, weightlifting, judo, para athletics, track cycling and lawn bowls stepped forward to shoulder the national challenge and deliver.

The campaign showed that Malaysia can remain competitive under a reduced programme, but the momentum and lessons gained must now be carried forward to the next edition to be held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, known as Amdavad 2030.

Weightlifting emerged as Malaysia’s biggest success story in Glasgow by contributing five of the contingent’s eight gold medals through Mohamad Aniq Kasdan, Muhamad Aznil Bidin, Muhammad Erry Hidayat, Muhammad Hafizuddin Roslin and Mohamad Syahmi Nor Ghazali.

The impressive haul confirmed the sport’s status as the new backbone of the national contingent at the Commonwealth Games.

More importantly, the success came after years of rebuilding, following doping controversies that once damaged the sport’s image and credibility.
