Director and actor Ameer, known for his controversial statements, has stirred up a fresh wave of criticism with his remarks about Soori's new film, Kottukkaali. The film, which has been well-received at international film festivals, hit theaters on August 23. While it has been celebrated in some circles, the film's reception among the general public has been mixed.
At a recent film event, Ameer criticized the decision to release Kottukkaali in theaters, stating, "The film was made specifically for international film festivals and should not have been released in theaters to compete with commercial movies. If I had produced it, I wouldn’t have released it in theaters. Pushing an award-winning film into a commercial theater setting is unnecessary and even violent." He directed his criticism toward the film's producer, Sivakarthikeyan.
Ameer’s comments have drawn backlash from celebrities and audiences who argue that filmmakers should have the freedom to choose whether their films are released in theaters or on OTT platforms. They believe it is up to the creators to make these decisions. However, some of Ameer's supporters claim that his remarks were more about the challenges non-commercial films face in the commercial cinema landscape rather than an attack on Kottukkaali itself.
Interestingly, a few netizens have highlighted a perceived contradiction, noting that Ameer previously supported the theatrical release of films like Merku Thodarchi Malai, produced by Vijay Sethupathi. Lenin Bharathi, the director of Merku Thodarchi Malai, has expressed disagreement with Ameer’s stance on Kottukkaali. This controversy has sparked a heated debate on social media.
