*Man Charged with Killing Parents and Niece Gets 9 Years for Injuring Another Niece*

*MUAR* — Azman Mohamed Nor, 48, who faces charges for the murder of his elderly parents and a niece, was sentenced to nine years in prison by the Sessions Court for causing grievous hurt to another niece. Judge Nariman Badruddin imposed the sentence after Azman pleaded guilty to the charges.

In addition to the prison term, Azman was fined RM5,000, with a default penalty of five months in jail. The case involved Azman using a wooden stick to severely injure his 14-year-old niece at their home on Jalan Sekolah Kampung Paya Redan between 1 am and 3 am on August 9.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Arif Marzuki argued for a substantial punishment due to the severe injuries the victim sustained, including head lacerations requiring eight stitches and a broken arm. Azman, who was unrepresented, expressed remorse for his actions during mitigation.

The court heard that the victim, along with her stepsister, who was killed in the incident, attempted to escape from their burning house and seek help from Azman. However, he attacked them, leaving them collapsed. Believing they were unconscious, Azman fled the scene. The victim later managed to seek help from a neighbor who took her to Sultanah Fatimah Hospital.

Azman was arrested on August 14 in Kuala Lumpur. On August 20, he was also charged in the Magistrate's Court with the murders of his parents, Ara Ab Hamit, 76, and Mohamed Nor Mohamed Yassin, 82, and his niece, Noradriana Nor Hasyim, 11. These charges carry the death penalty under Section 302 of the Penal Code, with possible commutation to a 30 to 40-year jail term and at least 20 strokes of the cane.
