*Butterworth, Sept 18 —* Heavy rain and storms, combined with high tides, have led to large waves striking Penang’s coast, especially at Pantai Bersih. The Butterworth Outer Ring Road (LLB) has issued a warning advising the public to avoid the beach area due to hazardous conditions and high waves that have even reached the back of the Bagan Ajam Rest and Service Area (R&R).
Visitors to the R&R are urged to stay away from the beach. Videos circulating on social media show substantial flooding in shops and stalls at Pantai Bersih, with one restaurant's floor collapsing, though fortunately, there have been no reported injuries.
Other locations, such as the Medan Renong food court in Padang Kota, also experienced seawater overflow. Traders and customers rushed to salvage their belongings, while Penang City Council (MBPP) workers began cleaning the area by 3:45 PM.
H’ng Mooi Lye, the Penang Local Government and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman, noted that special units from MBPP and Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) are working around the clock to address complaints. Since Sunday, MBPP has reported 150 incidents of fallen trees, while MBSP has reported 65.
For emergencies, the public is encouraged to reach out to the MBPP and MBSP hotlines and to remain vigilant.
