Fahmi: U Mobile Chosen for 5G Network via Open Tender, Not Direct Award*

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 — Communication Minister Fahmi Fadzil clarified in Parliament today that U Mobile was selected as Malaysia’s second 5G network provider through an open tender process, not a direct award. He emphasized that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) conducted a thorough evaluation based on factors such as business and technical plans, customer satisfaction, and past infrastructure performance.

Fahmi responded to a question from Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim, stressing that the decision was made with transparency and good governance. He also assured that MCMC would monitor U Mobile’s compliance with regulatory standards and enforce actions if needed.

He further noted that U Mobile’s foreign equity ownership is within the permissible limit of 49%, with plans to reduce it to 20% to increase local control. U Mobile has a track record of over 17 years and will work with other telecom providers to deliver world-class 5G services.
