Diabetes on the Rise in Malaysia: Awareness and Action Needed*
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 — Despite the growing adoption of the “kurang manis” (less sweet) approach to reduce sugar intake, diabetes and pre-diabetes rates in Malaysia remain alarmingly high. According to the 2023 National Health and Morbidity Survey, 15.6% of adults have diabetes, and one in six Malaysians are at risk of developing it.
Worryingly, 76% of people have never tested their blood sugar levels, missing early warning signs like pre-diabetes, which can progress to type 2 diabetes without intervention. Key risk factors include obesity, poor diets, genetics, and sedentary lifestyles.
Regular blood sugar monitoring, a healthy diet, exercise, and weight management are vital to reversing pre-diabetes and managing type 2 diabetes. Early action is crucial to address this escalating health crisis.
