KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian ministers collectively made 236 official overseas trips last year, with the Foreign Affairs Minister leading with 39 visits, according to official records. The Prime Minister made 19 trips, while the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry took 18. Other ministers with significant overseas engagements included the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister (15) and the Higher Education Minister (11). Some ministers made fewer trips, including the Youth and Sports Minister, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, and the Federal Territories Minister, who each made one trip.
Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), explained that these official visits are part of Malaysia’s involvement in international organizations. She noted that the primary purpose of these trips is to attend meetings with organizations such as the United Nations, Apec, ASEAN, OIC, WEF, and D-8.
She emphasized that the presence of Cabinet ministers at these meetings is vital in demonstrating Malaysia's commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations and its global position. Additionally, these visits are essential for promoting trade and investment, aiming to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) and enhance the national economy.
The total expenditure for these 236 overseas visits amounted to RM44 million. Dr. Zaliha added that these trips are conducted under strict conditions, ensuring they are carried out in a cost-effective and prudent manner.
