KUALA LUMPUR — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) has denied allegations that two of its volunteers were proselytising to Muslims at a People’s Housing Programme (PPR) project.
In a statement, the Mormon Church clarified that its volunteers have never attempted to convert Muslims and are committed to following local laws. The Church reaffirmed its doctrine of "obeying, honouring, and sustaining the law" and stressed its respect for Malaysia’s legal and religious framework.
The controversy arose after reports claimed two foreign volunteers were confronted by PPR residents for allegedly engaging in preaching. Under Malaysian law, proselytising to Muslims is a criminal offence. The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) called for legal action if the claims were true.
