KUALA LUMPUR — KTMB revealed that widespread train delays in the north were caused by cable theft involving its signalling systems on three key routes. Thefts at Tapah Road–Sungkai, Kamunting–Bagan Serai, and Simpang Ampat–Bukit Mertajam caused ETS and Komuter services to be delayed by up to 115 minutes.
KTMB reported 45 such incidents this year, calling the thefts an act of sabotage that endangers passengers and cripples operations. In response, KTMB is rolling out a RM12.8 million annual upgrade over three years to improve security at hotspots. Measures include lockable manhole covers, CCTV, drones, anti-climb fencing, and increased patrols with police.
Losses from cable thefts in the northern sector have hit RM1.44 million since 2024. KTMB apologised for the disruptions and urged the public to report suspicious activities.
