SYDNEY — Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Australia intends to counter the growing belief that democratic systems are failing and play a stabilising role amid rising global tensions.

In his first major address since re-election, Albanese warned of global uncertainty and the rise of populism driven by economic exclusion and distrust in institutions. He said Australia’s responsibility is to disprove such “corrosive” views through effective governance.

Albanese condemned the rubber bullet injury of an Australian journalist in Los Angeles protests, calling it “horrific” and confirming his government raised concerns with the U.S.

Ahead of his first meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the G7 in Canada, Albanese said discussions will cover tariffs and U.S. calls for increased Australian defence spending. He declined to commit to a 3.5% GDP target, stressing focus on defence capabilities like local missile production.

Albanese also emphasized strengthening ties across the Pacific and Asia to boost regional security amid growing strategic competition.
