Today, 25 rivers in southwestern China have exceeded flood warning levels, leading to the evacuation of over 10,000 people. This severe flooding is a result of the remnants of former Typhoon Danas combining with East Asian monsoon rains.

Ten rivers, including the Longyan in Chongqing, are at risk of bursting their embankments. Record high levels were reported in the Chishui River in Guizhou (highest since 1953) and the Xiaocao River in Sichuan (highest in 29 years). One county in Yunnan recorded its highest single-day rainfall since 1958.

Heavy rains have also impacted Beijing, with one area receiving 68.2 mm of rain in an hour. Meteorologists attribute the extreme rainfall to climate change, which is increasingly overwhelming China's aging flood defenses. Health authorities in Beijing have warned about increased risks of water and food contamination due to the weather.
