Bangladesh's former police chief, Chowdhury Abdullah Mamun, has pleaded guilty to crimes against humanity committed during a crackdown on protests in July-August 2024 that killed up to 1,400 people. He has agreed to become a witness for the prosecution, providing information on the atrocities.

Meanwhile, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her interior minister, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, were formally indicted on similar charges by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). Hasina, 77, who fled to India after her 15-year rule ended, faces at least five charges including "abetment, incitement, complicity, facilitation, conspiracy and failure to prevent mass murder." Her trial in absentia began on June 1, and she was already convicted of contempt of court in a separate case on July 2. Kamal is also believed to be in India.
