Effective today, Malaysia no longer treats attempted suicide as a criminal offence, marking a major reform in conjunction with World Suicide Prevention Day 2025. Individuals who attempt suicide will now be offered mental health support instead of facing jail time or fines. The change follows the enforcement of three new laws passed in 2023 which strengthen mental health interventions by empowering authorities to rescue and assist individuals in crisis. In a joint statement, the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) and Health Ministry (MOH) said the Madani government hopes the move will reduce stigma, encourage help-seeking behaviour, and lower suicide rates nationwide.
