National mixed doubles shuttler Lim Chiew Sien is facing a frantic 27-hour journey to Birmingham after her original flight to the All England Open was cancelled. The cancellation was triggered by escalating tensions and airspace closures in the Middle East, which was her intended transit route. To ensure she didn't miss the prestigious tournament, Chiew Sien had to spend RM10,000 on a last-minute ticket that takes her through Shanghai and London before a final bus leg to the venue.
Despite the grueling travel schedule and the significant personal cost, the shuttler remains positive about her situation. She noted that while her partner, Wong Tien Ci, and other professional pairs have already arrived in Birmingham, she is thankful that her opening match does not start until Wednesday. This small window provides her with a vital opportunity to recover from the long journey before stepping onto the court.
The delay adds a layer of difficulty to an already daunting opening round, where Chiew Sien and Tien Ci are set to face the third-seeded Thai pair, Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran. This is not the first time she has dealt with such travel headaches, but she emphasized the importance of staying focused on the competition regardless of the global circumstances affecting her commute.
