GEORGE TOWN: A 2.4m-long Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin was found dead along the shoreline in Padang Kota Lama here.

The Penang Fisheries Department, in a Facebook posting last week, said it received a report on the stranded marine mammal before despatching officers from its Fisheries Conservation and Protection Branch to the scene.

"The animal was identified as an Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis), measuring 2.4m in length and weighing about 150kg.

"Personnel from the northeast district Civil Defence Force also assisted the department in handling and disposing of the dolphin's carcass," it said.

Penang Fisheries Department director expressed appreciation to the Civil Defence Force personnel for their cooperation and assistance throughout the operation.

The department also thanked members of the public for promptly reporting the incident.

It urged the public to continue reporting any sightings of stranded endangered marine mammals in Penang waters to enable immediate action by the authorities.
