KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 6 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik wanted to make a statement after their failure at last month's All England, and the men's pair certainly did so at the Badminton Asian Championships (BAC) on Sunday.
After the Malaysian duo captured the Asian crown in emphatic fashion, they acknowledged the guidance of Herry IP, the new national men's doubles coach, aka the "Magician", in Ningbo, China.
Aaron-Wooi Yik overcame China's Chen Bo Yang-Liu Yi 21-19, 21-17 in the Asian Championships men's doubles final.
In Europe, Aaron struggled with a right shoulder injury and Wooi Yik had looked dejected after they suffered first round defeats at the Orleans Masters and the All England.
It even led to Herry, who had produced numerous Olympic, world and All England champions as Indonesia coach, admitting failure. Herry couldn't travel to Europe then due to visa issues.
But this time, Herry, also known as the "Fire Dragon", was able to accompany the Malaysian shuttlers to the land of the badminton dragons for the BAC, and cast his court side influence.
And as it turned out, he guided Aaron-Wooi Yik to the Asian title, last won by Malaysia 18 years ago through Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah.
