LOS ANGELES — Authorities in Idaho have identified 20-year-old Wess Roley as the suspect behind a deadly ambush on Canfield Mountain that killed two firefighters and injured a third on Sunday.
Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris said Roley, originally from California, allegedly started a brush fire and then opened fire on first responders before taking his own life.
The fallen firefighters, Frank Harwood, 42, and John Morrison, 52, were both experienced members of the Kootenai County Fire Department. Dave Tysdal, 47, was injured and has undergone two surgeries.
Sheriff Norris said Roley once aspired to be a firefighter, though the motive remains unclear. The fire was deemed intentional, and around 300 law enforcement officers responded to the chaotic scene.
The incident adds to the ongoing gun violence crisis in the U.S., where 189 mass shootings have occurred this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
