DENPASAR — At least four people have died and dozens remain missing after a ferry sank late Wednesday night on its way from Java to Bali, Indonesian authorities said.
The KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, carrying 65 passengers and 22 vehicles, went down about 25 minutes after departure amid bad weather. Twenty-three survivors have been rescued so far, while search teams continue to look for the missing.
President Prabowo Subianto, currently in Saudi Arabia, ordered an immediate emergency response. Marine accidents are common in Indonesia due to lax safety and rough seas. Rescuers say the number of people onboard may have exceeded the manifest.
