JAKARTA — Brazil is considering legal action against Indonesia at an international human rights body over the death of Juliana Marins, 26, who fell into a ravine while trekking Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island.

Marins was alive when first spotted by rescuers, but harsh weather and treacherous terrain delayed her recovery. She was eventually retrieved 600m down the cliff, but could not be saved.

Brazil’s Federal Public Defender’s Office (DPU) said it may escalate the case to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights if Indonesia is found negligent, and has asked Brazilian police to investigate. A second autopsy was conducted in Brazil after the initial Indonesian post-mortem failed to determine the exact time of death.

Indonesia defended its response, saying the rescue followed national standards despite challenging conditions. Officials acknowledged the tragedy as a wake-up call to improve evacuation equipment and emergency preparedness at Mount Rinjani.

Local authorities are reviewing procedures, planning better signage, climber quotas, and first-aid training for guides and porters. Indonesia’s Forestry Minister said the government is ready to defend its actions if sued.
