TEL AVIV — Israel will send a delegation to Qatar today for ceasefire and hostage negotiations, even as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office called Hamas’ proposed changes to a truce deal “unacceptable.”
Hamas on Friday said it responded “positively” to a US-backed ceasefire plan after President Donald Trump claimed Israel had agreed to terms for a 60-day truce. However, a Hamas-allied Palestinian official said issues over aid, Rafah crossing access, and a timeline for Israeli troop withdrawal remain unresolved.
Netanyahu’s office confirmed Israel would still attend talks to pursue a hostage deal based on the original Qatari proposal it had accepted. Netanyahu, set to meet Trump in Washington tomorrow, insists Hamas must disarm — a demand the group continues to reject.
The conflict, which began with Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack killing about 1,200 Israelis and taking 251 hostages, has since claimed over 57,000 Palestinian lives in Gaza, per local health officials. Israel denies accusations of genocide and war crimes amid the humanitarian crisis.
