BASEL — England retained their Women’s Euro title after defeating Spain 3-1 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw after extra time. Chloe Kelly coolly slotted the decisive kick, avenging England’s 2023 World Cup final loss to La Roja.

Spain dominated much of the game and took the lead through Mariona Caldentey’s header, but England bounced back, equalising via Alessia Russo just before the hour mark. In a tense shootout, England held their nerve as Spain missed three spot-kicks, including one from Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati.

The victory marks back-to-back European titles for Sarina Wiegman’s squad and her third straight Euro triumph as a coach. Despite losing their opening match, England showed trademark resilience throughout the tournament, staging dramatic comebacks against Sweden, Italy, and now Spain.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer hailed the team as “history makers,” while Spain’s Bonmati admitted, “Football is cruel,” as her side missed out on adding a Euro title to their World Cup triumph.
