Today, the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) urged Kedah to release water from the Beris dam into Sungai Muda. Expressing concern, PBAPP noted that the water level in Sungai Muda on Penang's side has remained below 2m consecutively for four days, raising alarms about the state's water supply.
Sungai Muda serves as Penang's main source of raw water, contributing over 80% of PBAPP's total supply. Both the Muda and Beris dams in Kedah release water into this river. PBAPP indicated that the water reserves in the Muda dam were critically low at 25.7% capacity as of last Friday, while the Beris dam reported a level of 82.4% on Thursday.
PBAPP, however, mentioned that it was utilizing water from the expanded Mengkuang dam (EMD) in Seberang Perai to maintain effective water supply services. Kedah has the option of releasing more water from the Beris dam to increase the level of Sungai Muda.
This step is intended to prevent significant problems at 14 water treatment plants (WTPs) in Kedah, as well as the Sungai Dua WTP in Penang.
PBAPP also mentioned that the low river levels should not pose an immediate threat to Penang's water supply due to the additional water from the EMD.
PBAPP stated that it remains on high alert and is closely monitoring the status of Sungai Muda. It also urged consumers to be more conservative with their water usage.
