In a raid on two apartment units in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, on 17/07/2024, police dismantled a cocaine processing and distribution lab, arresting three individuals. Authorities seized 44.93kg of cocaine, valued at RM9 million, intended for foreign markets.
According to Kosmo, the director of the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department, Khaw Kok Chin, revealed that the recent raids were carried out in collaboration with the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
Among those arrested were a married couple: a 41-year-old man who worked as a runner and his 41-year-old wife who managed supplies and processed the cocaine in their apartment. Authorities also seized 52.5 liters of chemicals used in cocaine production, stored in wine bottles.
The couple had been renting the apartment for RM2,350 a month since February, using it as a store and lab for cocaine production. During the raids, another apartment in Cheras was searched, leading to the arrest of a 38-year-old man, also a runner. One kilogram of chemicals intended for cocaine processing was found there.
Khaw noted that the seized drugs could potentially serve 225,000 users. In addition to the drugs, police confiscated cash, jewelry, a vehicle, and branded watches, totaling RM201,086.
The operation targeted a group active since early this year, which processed cocaine locally before exporting it. One of the suspects tested positive for ketamine and had eight prior drug-related convictions.
Khaw confirmed that investigations are ongoing to locate the group's remaining associates. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which stipulates severe penalties, including death or life imprisonment, and a minimum of 15 strokes of the rotan if convicted.
