The Terengganu Fisheries Department has issued a warning to the public attending the Kerang Festival at Pantai Sura, Dungun, advising them to properly cook cockles collected from the beach. While recent tests on water and shellfish samples showed no signs of biotoxins, the department emphasized that cockles are classified as Class B seafood and must be fully cooked to prevent health risks. Past tests have revealed high levels of faecal coliform, E. coli, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus bacteria in the clams. The public is urged to follow food safety guidelines after an unusual high tide caused cockles to wash ashore, despite police warnings to avoid collecting them.
